In January 2020 Deborah was appointed Chair of Worldwide and UK Mindshare Roots Committee, four months after joining the agency. Roots is responsible for raising awareness for greater diversity and equity in media.
In response to the BLM movement in June, Deborah quickly mobilised the Roots Committee to focus on the key issues specifically affecting Black media professionals. Within 24-hours she developed and sold in a 90-day action plan to the global ex-co.
In just three months and with zero budget, Deborah led the Roots committee to deliver 16 DE&I initiatives, including a series of safe space sessions to over 400 people; consultation on the Global DE&I training platform; implementing the Black Community PMP supporting over 100 Black-owned media platforms; the sell-in of Inclusion Planners to the UK business, ensuring consistent representation in the planning lifecycle. She supported the Black Talent Sponsorship programme, providing equal access to career progression. Deborah also led the delivery of 10 Black History Month events, reaching over 250 people and raising almost £2000 for the Stephen Lawrence Trust and Black Minds Matter.
Deborah is the UK representative on Mindshare's Global Collective Council (DE&I steering group) and has since been elected to chair the UK/WW Collective Council, setting up a further seven ERGs. She also consults on a growing number of clients' DE&I initiatives.
Outside work Deborah runs a mentoring scheme for Black sixth formers and recent graduates to shape their career goals and apply for internships, graduate schemes or work experience at Fortune 500 companies.
